Air Conditioning Repair

On a hot summer day, nothing feels better than cool air blowing from your air conditioner. But what do you do when your AC fails to turn on? We recommend reviewing our easy-to-follow checklist for common AC issues and how to fix them yourself. If your problem isn't on the list, give us a call!

  • Many issues can prevent your air conditioning from turning on.

    Triggered Circuit Breaker

Find your main electrical panel on the wall of your garage, basement or closet and:

-Dry your hands and feet before checking the breakers.

-Find the breaker marked "AC" and confirm it's in the "on" spot. The lever will be flipped in the "off" position if it's tripped.

-Switch the lever back on. If it instantly triggers again, stop immediately and give us a call. A fuse that keeps tripping usually means an issue beyond your control.

    Wrong Thermostat Settings

Sometimes, your air conditioning is in the wrong setting. Here's how to check and see if this is your issue:

-Replace the batteries if the readout is empty. If the monitor is showing jumbled letters, get a new thermostat.

-Check the correct option is on display. If you can't update it, override it by decreasing the temperature and pressing the "hold" button. This will force your air conditioning to work if scheduling is wrong.

-Set the thermostat five degrees colder than the space’s temperature. Your AC won’t start if set to your home's current temperature.

    Shut-Off Switch

-Your system usually has a power-cutting device near its outside unit. This device is commonly in a metal box attached to your residence. The switch may have been turned off accidentally.

    Clogged Condensate Drain Pan

Condensate drain pans hold liquid that your equipment drips during operation. This pan can be situated under or in your furnace or air handler.

Too much water can obstruct or clog the drain pan, causing a safety feature to switch off your air conditioner.

If your pan includes a PVC pipe or drain, you can eliminate the surplus condensation with a formulated pan-cleaning capsule. You can get these capsules at a home improvement or hardware store.

If your pan includes a pump, look for the float switch. If the switch is up and there’s moisture in the pan, you may need to install a new pump. We recommend giving us a call for pump installation.

  • A running air conditioner failing to blow cool air may lack refrigerant.

Check Your Filter to Unclog Airflow

Your air filter may need replacing to restore your cooling comfort and improve air flow. We recommend changing your filter monthly for peak performance.

-Switch your air conditioning off completely.

-Find your old filter in your furnace's blower compartment, filter compartment, or wall-mounted filter grill.

-Hold the old filter up to a light. If the light doesn't shine through, put in a brand-new filter.

    Refrigerant Issues?

Refrigerant generates cool air in your home. Low refrigerants cannot remove heat and humidity efficiently. Your refrigerant is most likely low if:

-Generating cool temperature takes more time.

-You need to lower the temperature on your thermostat continually.

-You feel warm or less than comfortable air moving through your vents.

-You hear hissing or bubbling sounds when the AC turns on.

  • Restriction or obstruction are among the most common causes of weak airflow. Here's what and how to check:

-Check your air filter and replace it if dirty.

-Ensure the air vents throughout your house are open.

-Does your air still refuse to flow correctly? If so, contact us and schedule an inspection. Your ducts might need to be repaired or reattached.

If you're still experiencing air flow issues, contact O’Brien Mechanical to schedule an inspection. Your ducts may need to be cleaned, repaired, or reattached. Our Technicians will do a thorough inspection of your duct system and make recommendations.

  • Change your filter if there's ice build-up around the unit. Turn entire system off, but leave the fan on.
